Our History

Previously a marsh land, where for herds of elephants roamed through the thick bush down to their watering hole is where Clarence Primary and Greyville race course now stand.

A path that has carved its name into the history books and led to the opening of the most amazing school, rich in culture, vibrancy and diversity…

Two very prominent roads (Avondale Road and Clarence Road) in the heart of Greyville was named after royal decent, Prince Albert Victor who held the title of Duke of Clarence and Avondale at that time.

Clarence opened its doors in August 1905, with its very first Head Mistress Miss A. Crowder. Known previously as Greyville Infant school with an enrolment of 300 learners.

In 1940 Greyville Infant school changed its name to Clarence Road School.

In 1970 Clarence expanded to become a full Primary school and was officially named Clarence Primary School.

In 1992, Clarence became a Model C School welcoming all cultural diversities.

Clarence Primary has experienced its many achievements through the decades. The expansion of the schools building including a new school hall, office block and many additional classrooms accommodating the Intermediate and Senior Phases.
